Very few people think about what would win out of console gaming and handheld gaming, and I am one of those very few people because I absolutely adore handheld games and everything about them. I’m going to talk to you about the pros and cons of both handheld and console gaming to determine which one suits you.
Benefits of console gaming
Consoles feature tons of AAA games that feature far superior graphics over handheld devices. Gaming consoles also provide a lot more open world experiences that couldn’t be achieved on handheld devices although some games contradict this such as Xenoblade Chronicles (the best game ever!) on the New Nintendo 3DS and Borderlands 2(also the best game ever!) on PlayStation Vita.
Unfortunately we haven’t seen any Elder Scrolls games on handheld gaming consoles :( The controllers for most home consoles are designed to be much more comfortable than most portable devices but luckily for us dedicated handheld gamers you can purchase grips for most devices for a fairly cheap price that feel almost as good as console controllers if not better.
Cons of console gaming
There aren’t too many negative aspects of console gaming but here’s a small list of a few of them. There are a fair few terrible games on consoles that abuse their flashy graphics to draw in customers, luckily this isn’t too big a deal because there are easy access to reviews on the internet that will point out these terrible games. Some consoles are prone to overheating over extended use which can ruin your gaming experience if you haven’t been able to save in a while
Benefits of handheld gaming
My favourite thing about handheld gaming consoles is their libraries often contain a lot more quirky titles than traditional gaming consoles.Handheld games have to rely on being enjoyable if they want to sell well because of the lack of graphical prowess that consoles possess similar to older video game consoles that didn’t have the technology to create flashy visuals in their games. Being able to play your video games anywhere at any time is a huge plus, so you can play handheld games while you’re on the loo, at a boring dinner party or snuggled up in bed without needing to sit up or twist your neck. Handheld gaming consoles are evolving and some console quality games can be played on those devices. The PlayStation vita is a good example of a device that has games with great visuals on a handheld device. You can also watch TV while playing your handheld games if they aren’t heavily story driven providing a unique experience that is very hard to emulate with consoles as you’ll need several TV’s to do so.
Cons of handheld gaming
Handheld Gaming consoles are often gimmicky for example the Nintendo DS’ two screens, the 3DS’ stereoscopic 3D and the Playstation’s rear touchpad and gyrosensor that you will rarely use or possibly hate although some games do utilize these features fairly well. Also if you play games for realistic visuals and cinematic immersion you most likely won’t get that from any handheld systems except the recent ones such as the PlayStation Vita
