Vague Voxels (week 8)

Previously my fellow team leader at the republic of cheerful, Lachlan, and I had taken a dip into the shallow end of the world of voxel graphics and the result was fairly unsuccessful for what we were attempting to do as it required importing the Exported .OBJ files into Maya causing some colour issues. We decided to drop the whole idea of implementing Voxel graphics… until now! Although there was a problem with importing the files into Maya for animating, there were no issues that we found by importing the non-animated files into Unity engine which is what brought us to the work we did this week.

Lachlan had been making the voxel images for the weaponry which can be selected at the Character Selection screen which I personally was very impressed with as he wasn’t primarily an artist and he had generally taken care of written work as team leaders often are. As the individual that primarily has been working on the character design elements of the game I was assigned the task of creating some Voxel portraits of the characters which are intended to be used  for the character selection screen and possibly the character purchase section of the Shaque(Shack) :D. I currently haven’t got access to the work that Lachlan had created to show you but it is possible for me to showcase what I have been getting up to as I always (emphasis on always) do. Anyway take a look:

I attempted to use similar restraints to that of the top down version of the sprites which were 9x9 pixels, in order to achieve a similar aesthetic but in a unique way. Although it may be difficult to tell what the characters are because of the very low amount of voxels used I’m sure (Hopefully) that if you take a look at some of my previous blog posts you would be able to tell which character is which. I really enjoyed learning how to utilize Voxel graphics and learning something completely new which I’ve never really touched upon until a couple of weeks ago. I would definitely love to create a game completely comprised of Voxel graphics in the future if I ever find the chance to.
