Tiny Top-Down Character Sprites (Week 7)

This week I have learnt the struggle of placing as much detail as possible into 6 sprites, 1 sprite for each character using a miniscule 9x9 pixel canvas size is quite a difficult task. It’s no secret that working with an extremely small workspace is difficult but I really expected to be able to put slightly more detail into them. Overall I am quite pleased with how the final outcome of these tiny top-down character sprites turned out but I wish there was a couple more pixels available for me to work in as it really limited the possible features that could be placed in each image. My crazy creations are displayed below for your viewing (dis)pleasure :) :

(All sprites are created with Adobe Photoshop CS6, also sorry they are so tiny because their scale will be multiplied by 28 in the engine to keep pixel size consistent)

I think they are perfectly fine except for one vital flaw that can’t really be fixed with such a low pixel count, which is the fact that they are adorable. Why’s that a problem you ask? Well if you take a look at my previous blog posts all of the character concepts are very much the opposite of what one might call adorable. Luckily our project “Artery” is designed to be as crazy as possible and not every aspect of it needs to make complete sense but I believe I did as well as I possibly could with the constraints that I had to abide to. At least now I have an understanding of how difficult it was previously to convey details in 16 bit video games and below to an extent.
