Why the PlayStation 2 was important in the history of game development (Week 10)

The PlayStation 2 introduced casual gamers to a hard-core gaming console because of simple features like an in-built DVD player which were quite expensive at the time of release, the PlayStation 2 was offered an affordable price interesting even those who had no interest in video games whatsoever. This was well before the release of popular mobile gaming platforms such as iOS and Android devices which further increased accessibility to video games for casual gamers.

The PS2 was the bestselling video game console of all time selling over 155 million consoles in total conveying how much it influenced the video game industry. The PS2 proved that video game consoles didn’t need to purely video game consoles and could introduce other media to attract a larger audience. An impressive total of 3874 games were created for the system from all genres paving the way for new video game franchises that exist today only due to the popularity of the PS2 system. The PS2 arguably influenced the gaming industry more than any other console.
