Western vs eastern games (Week 11)

Due to the cultural differences between the eastern parts and the western parts of the world, the game industry is significantly different on both sides of the spectrum. During recent years it has become increasingly obvious that both the west and the east favour a particular genre, American countries tend to have an obsession with First Person Shooters which is evident due to the overwhelming amount of first person shooters being developed there. According to VGCharts; 4 of the USA 10 top-sellers are FPS’s. The best-seller in japan by an extremely wide margin selling 1.48 million copies is pocket monster omega ruby and alpha sapphire suggesting that the Japanese audience tend to love their RPG’s.

3 of the top sellers in japan are also RPG’s further enhancing the point made earlier. But just because those genres are the most popular doesn’t mean that every gamer in that region will play those specific games. I primarily enjoy eastern games due to the overwhelming amount of RPGs produced there but I do enjoy some of the RPGs produced in the east like the elder scrolls for example. In Australia and Europe 7 of the top sellers according to VGcharts are shooters. Hopefully this provided some insight on the game industry and essentially how cultural differences effect the popularity of video games in different regions.
