Hey everyone, I’ve been doing a lot of drawing lately and I’ve been thinking of explaining how it can be helpful when you are drawing yourself, if you don’t know why you should be researching for your artwork. Research can be a very vital part of creating art for games and other forms of media. It is not always necessary but there are times that it will be, and times when it will just be beneficial,For example when creating a historically accurate game, you will need to do a lot of research on the appearance and function of objects and people, and possibly even how the world around those objects operated.
Researching can be beneficial for understanding the appearance of any object such as the shape, texture and reflectivity, for example if you want to draw a metal object with a small amount of rust on it, research will help you understand how light will reflect off both.Research is not vital when drawing for games where you have a lot of creative freedom, for example creating unique creatures that can have any appearance that you like, But research is helpful in learning other artists style, and creating different shapes and body parts for the said creatures.
I do most of my research through a series of simple google searches but there are occasions where books may be a bit more helpful as they have a collection of information all in one place, for example when drawing historically accurate medieval charac, ters I use my book medieval costume, armour and weapons to understand how those things mentioned in the title functioned during specific time periods and countries. Hopefully if you aren’t very art savvy this really brief explanation has helped you understand why you should research before you draw.
