Satisfying Melee Combat (Week 6)

The Monster Hunter series is a fairly overlooked Action series produced by Capcom which has arguably some of the most satisfying melee combat in an action video game series. It is immensely popular in Japan but has found it difficult to gain attention in other countries. As the name of the title states it is generally a game where you hunt monsters, some large and some small. The player also gathers materials and creates weapons items and armour using these materials accompanied by other materials carved from monsters. This is the most interesting part as there are several weapon types that can be created. Each weapon type has varied attack speed and damage which is extremely well balanced.

What makes the combat so satisfying in the monster hunter series is the fact that every weapon type feels like it has weight for example the great sword weapon type is extremely heavy and powerful slowing the player’s movement speed down and attacking extremely slow with powerful charged attacks, on the other end of the spectrum is the Dual swords that are extremely light which allows the player to move and attack swiftly dealing weak attacks which can accumulate dealing a lot of damage. As players continually attack parts of monsters they can eventually break for example continually attacking a monsters tail can eventually slice it clean off which is extremely satisfying to say the least (Here is a link if you want to see this in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NeXl7pEw0Q). If you haven’t played a monster hunter game and you enjoy strong difficulty and satisfying combat I definitely recommend trying it out.
