great games that are rough around the edges

There is a saying in the gaming community that games don’t need good graphics to be good games, younger generations often overlook this as AAA titles focused on flashiness and photorealistic visual appeal flood the market which often leave little to the imagination for the players in question. As a handheld gamer I agree with the statement mentioned earlier as handheld consoles generally lag graphically behind mainstream consoles which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The fact that handheld video games can’t rely too much on how many polygons each model in the game have to sell  their games they often have to be a bit more creative than spitting out the same First Person Shooter every year.  Here are some examples of games that lack in the graphical department but exceed in the gameplay department.

World of Warcraft is not necessarily a bad looking game but the visuals have definitely fallen behind other pc games and console games alike over the years. The textures and character models have been updated very slightly but everything still appears dated like it’s still 2005 when the game was first released. On the flipside World of Warcraft features some of the most content in any video game ever made. It is the most played video game of all time with over 60 billion hours of total combined play time of all its users showcasing how truly spectacular the game is. Unfortunately I don’t think there will ever be a complete graphical remake of the game because of the pure amount of content that would need to be redone but WoW is a perfect example of a game that doesn’t need to look good to be good.

One of my favourite games of all time is very rough around the edges in comparison to its console predecessor on the PlayStation 2 because it’s a Nintendo ds game; Dragon quest 9 is an amazing JRPG with tonnes of content and an amazing levelling system, that allows players to keep the skills they learn in one class when they are currently using another so it feels like your characters are always progressing. It takes around 700 hours to do everything in the game which means there is an immense amount of post-game content. There was a lot of controversy when the game was released on a handheld because to a lot of people it felt like a back step with much downgraded graphics in comparison to dragon quest 8, but in the end dragon quest 9 is a masterpiece as far as handheld RPGs go.
