My thoughts on independent game development

The concept of independent game development is extremely exciting and I think a lot of game developers and non- game developers may be able to relate to this post. The fact that independent game development exists is why I am currently studying a game development course as it provides many opportunities that may have not been available or easily available in the past few decades. Personally, I could not picture myself working for a huge company that would limit my creative freedom to please a crowd that would eat up the same FPS(first person shooter) or MOBA(multiplayer online battle arena) or generic zombie game again and again.
In the future I see myself working as part of a small studio that I can consider close friends that have similar interests and develop simple yet addictive games that will help us make a living and produce more games for others to enjoy. I have often considered working alone on my games as a last resort whilst working at my normal day job in case I am not able to sell my games as game development has always been my passion and I remember paper prototyping when I was around 5 years old and visualising creating my own colourful kart racers. I feel privileged to have grown during the time where game development software is easy to access and learn and people can express themselves through their games.
The good thing about independent games is that they don’t require flashy realistic graphics to be enjoyable unlike most AAA titles in fact you could create a text adventure for mobile with no graphics at all and make some profit. Although there are rarely any indie masterpieces, indie games are a great way to have a little bit of unique fun as they have to stand out if developers plan to make any revenue off them. It is my dream to continue working on my previous project the Cosmic Crucible of Chaos after completing my course as I believe it has the most potential out of any of my previous projects I’ve worked on and through the large amounts of testing we have gotten for the game people seem to really enjoy shooting cars of the road into their friends. There is no greater feeling then knowing someone enjoys your creation.
